Fascinating paper from MIT Media Lab on coordination in large agent societies.

    (bookmark it)

I've seen a lot of success with agent-to-agent messaging recently.

That's exciting. I think agent persistence and coordination will unlock more novel use cases.

The authors report that with push delivery, an agent leading 20 negotiations proposes options that were already rejected 97% of the time. Its context fills up fast, and it drops the oldest replies.

The alternative they study is a pull-based inbox. Messages wait outside the context, and each agent's own rules decide what it reads and keeps.

In simulations of 1,000 to 16,000 LLM agents under noisy traffic, first-come-first-read misses every request. An inbox that first reads messages carrying a refundable deposit still finds about 60% of the agents a request needs, at every size.

Each inbox sets four rules. They decide what the agent reads, what it keeps, what a sender pays, and what a reply may say.

For multi-agent systems under load, you want to design the reading rules as carefully as the delivery protocol.

Nice to see conversation data that isn't decades-old telephone audio.

Conversation is mostly timing. This is the first dataset release I've seen that's really built around that.

The 'this is only the start' part of the thread on @voicearena_ai's Joy caught my eye. 10x and 100x of this would be a lot. Really good work from this team.

    AI is automating the economy.

And the only way to stay relevant is by helping it do so.

We’ve trained Claude to flag potential misuse in conversations, a technique we call self-assessment. Right after it responds, Claude gives a preliminary safety assessment of the conversation.

Since we began using self-assessment in June, it has surfaced misuse that our other safeguards weren’t designed to catch.

Because Claude has already read the conversation, self-assessment is very efficient. And unlike classifiers, which target a discrete set of harms, it draws on Claude’s own judgment, so it gets more accurate as our models improve.

ok first impressions: i unironically think Cartesia might 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 "𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝟭 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴" with this

it just launched and it's built for enterprise teams first, but the basic idea feels correct:

    > right now voice agents either sound human but you can't let them run on their own, or they get the work done and keep talking over you when you cut in

    > Cartesia tunes its voice models and the harness around them together, and 85% of calls have zero talking over or dead air, vs just 67% for other agents

    > people called 30 voice agents blind to book appointments and order takeout, and it came out #1. it's also #1 on ServiceNow's enterprise voice agent benchmark

    > hook up your APIs, CRM + customer records and it can look up orders and move appointments mid-call

    > write a prompt and you're on a live phone call in minutes, phone line included

    > 50% off at launch, 3 cents a minute, and it's already handled tens of millions of conversations across finance, retail, hospitality + healthcare

i think the endgame here is basically 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯

you call to return something, switch to an exchange halfway through, and it just handles it

    - iPhone Duo is a flop - MacBook touchscreen is a flop - Apple homeview is useless - AirPods are the same in years - iPhones are the same in years

I want to give Apple money. A lot of money. They just don’t want it.

Why aren’t they going all in on the Vision Pro? Or a tiny portable device? Or just… AI?

The future of computers isn’t a device with a flat touchscreen and a keyboard.

    Steve would agree, I think.

The ranking members of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees have written a letter to President Trump asking whether he has been soliciting advice from Grok in order to help carry out his official duties as President of the United States.

They also demanded that he preserve any prompts sent to Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, as well as outputs in response to those prompts, that were 'submitted to AI chatbots in carrying out your constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties.'

The letter was provided by Politico.

Really cool voice dataset from @voicearena_ai for training conversational models!

This is for anyone who's researching or developing voice models.

The data here is pretty cool:

    • Each speaker has a separate audio track • You get access to overlapping speech • Data includes interruptions, pauses, and "mm-hmm's"

If you want your models to get conversational timing right, you must use data with separate audio tracks for each speaker.

What if AI agents could safely improve their own harness at runtime? UC Berkeley PhD candidate and senior researcher @AlexKrentsel from @GoogleResearch recently presented his work on self-improving AI agents at Arena HQ.

This architecture, Exo, borrows the exokernel idea from operating systems, separating an agent into a protected mechanism layer (state, history, secrets, and a "guardian") and a fully evolvable policy layer.

Alex walks through the design, results on benchmarks and open-world RuneScape tasks, where Exo was 31-62% cheaper than Codex and Pi, and more.

Big thanks to @AlexKrentsel for joining us to present his work with @istoica05, @martin_casado, @ankrgyl, Sylvia Ratnasamy, @BerkeleySky, and @netsyslab.

People who have been in research fields develop a felt sense that most "research" (in almost any field that isn't exactingly technical) is research theater, and many superstar careers enjoy star status not because of a unique connection to the truth but because of a unique connection with an audience. No one really has the time or stature to, from a position of objectivity and trust, bring popular researchers to heel. But it will get increasingly hard to hide from serious critique. The machines can do critique now, at the level of depth and rigor previously only possible for the academically deranged. We're going to have to revise a lot of what we "know" about the world that isn't really knowledge but is actually just received popular consensus - like floating voltages without grounding wires. The grounding wires are coming.
